Historic City News has learned that the St. Augustine City Commissioners will meet today and discuss guidelines for public art, give final approval to the new Council on Aging community building and decide whether to dissolve some city committees such as Parking and Traffic according to the published agenda.
The commission’s regular meeting today is at 5 p.m. in the Alcazar Room at City Hall, 75 King St.
Public Art
An artist was going to donate some of his sculptures to the San Sebastian project, but the development is now in foreclosure. The artist instead wants to donate it to the city. Mayor Joe Boles wants to discuss creating guidelines for the city accepting public art to find a way city staff can vet the art without stomping on freedom of speech rights.
Council on Aging
The Council on Aging is asking for final approval of its Planned Unit Development to construct the River House Community Center for seniors, located at 180 Marine St. The commission passed the center on first reading and is expected to give final approval today, according to city staff. There will be a public hearing on the development.
City Committees
When new commissioners are elected, the board reviews its city committees and determines whether or not to keep them. An example is the Parking and Traffic Committee, which was relied on for recommendations during construction of the city’s Visitor Information Center parking garage. If the commission decides to keep the various committees, then each commissioner can appoint new people to them.
