County utility hosts open house

St. Johns County Utilities will be hosting an Open House on April 22nd according to an announcement received by Historic City News.

The St. Johns County Utilities Department will host an Open House on Wednesday, April 22, at the Utility Building, located at 1205 State Road 16 in St. Augustine. As part of National Water Conservation Month, the Open House will begin at 10:30 am with a presentation on “Florida Friendly Landscaping” by St. Johns County Agricultural Extension Agent Joe Sewards. Following the presentation, Florida friendly plants and rain harvesting systems will be displayed, and a drawing will be held for someone to take home a Florida friendly plant. Light refreshments will be served.

Concurrently, a children’s conservation program will be offered for kids ages three to six. Attendees will participate in a conservation project and receive water-friendly activity materials to take home, as well as a water conservation audit to conduct with their families. Additionally, children will take home a terrarium to watch a miniature eco-system grow. Light refreshments will be served.

Following the activities at the main Utility Building, all attendees will be invited to travel to the Utility’s state-of-the-art water treatment plant off County Road 214 for the second part of the Open House. Activities at the reverse osmosis water treatment plant will include public tours, light refreshments and an additional Florida friendly plant drawing. This tour promises to be interesting and enlightening, as many steps are involved between water being drawn from the aquifer and arriving in the home as safe drinking water. The public tour is a great opportunity for the public to view the highly technical and sophisticated water treatment process.
