Driving restrictions at Porpoise Point

Posted on 05/30/200906/01/2009 By Historic City News

Porpoise Point
St. Johns County Recreation and Parks reported to Historic City News yesterday that a portion of Porpoise Point will be closed to vehicles.

Due to habitat nesting in the area, a small portion of the beach at Porpoise Point will be closed to driving for the remainder of shorebird nesting season.

To protect nesting Least Terns and recently sighted Wilson’s Plovers Chicks at Porpoise Point, there will be a quarter-mile portion of the beach that will be restricted from vehicle access until the chicks have departed.

Vehicles will be allowed to use the beach access ramps at both Porpoise Point and Vilano Beach throughout the nesting season; however vehicles cannot drive on the beach from one ramp to the other.

Porpoise Point is one of the last remaining nesting sites for these two species, and St. Johns County has an obligation to protect them.

Shorebird stewards will be present throughout the weekend to answer questions regarding the life cycles of these federally protected birds.
