Kevin Kelshaw, Media Relations Officer with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, reported to Historic City News that deputies with the Traffic Crash Response and Traffic Enforcement Units will be out this Friday night and early Saturday morning conducting a county wide DUI saturation patrol.
The primary objective of this detail is to reduce needless injuries and deaths associated with impaired driving. Deputies will also be looking for motorists who refuse to wear their seat belts and obey applicable speed limits.
“It is hoped with this operation,” St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar said today, “that through our aggressive enforcement efforts we can reduce needless crashes associated with impaired, impatient, and inattentive drivers thereby making our streets and highways safer and improves the quality of life for everyone.”
In St. Johns County alone 570 people were arrested for D.U.I. in 2007 and 555 for the year 2008. In the first six months of this year 215 were arrested on D.U.I. charges.
Statewide last year, over 61,000 people were arrested for D.U.I.
Sheriff Shoar is committed to making the roads safer through the use of D.U.I. checkpoints, saturation patrols, as well as educational programs for our teens.
