Flagler students win leadership grant

Liz Daube reported to Historic City News that the Flagler College Students In Free Enterprise team has received the Jenzabar Foundation’s 2009 Student Leadership Award grant.

Jenzabar, Inc. is a leading provider of software, strategies and services for higher education. The mission of the Jenzabar Foundation is to recognize and support the good works and humanitarian efforts of student leaders across the global community.

“It is a great honor to be recognized nationally for our ethics project,” said Donna Delorenzo, co-adviser for FCSIFE.

Students Jessica Welch and Kameron Lapp were instrumental in creating, writing and producing the ethics video that won the leadership award. Welch, president of FCSIFE, will be traveling to Washington, D.C., with FCSIFE co-adviser Barry Sand to receive the award.

FCSIFE created a series of training videos for the Winmark Corporation that addressed ethical behavior in a retail setting. The videos will be used to teach more than 9,000 employees in 900 stores across the U.S. and Canada. They take a youthful, informal, funny approach to address topics such as theft, honesty and customer service.

Lapp said the majority of Winmark employees are ages 16 to 25, a demographic that the SIFE students could easily understand. Welch added, “We dramatized the problems by using humor and language that the employees could relate to.”

The Flagler team will use the $5,000 grant award to finance additional marketing and production of ethics videos for companies nationwide.
