New additions to Flagler faculty this fall

Director of Public Information Brian Thompson reported to Historic City News that Flagler College has hired eight new faculty members who will begin this fall.

“Once again, we have recruited a remarkably strong group of teacher-scholars who will further strengthen the Flagler faculty and add to its depth,” said Alan Woolfolk, Flagler’s dean of academic affairs.

Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college that offers 25 majors, 27 minors and two pre-professional programs, the largest majors being business, education and communication. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College.

U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review regularly feature Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost; tuition is $19,330, including room and board.

A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for the historic beauty of its campus. The main building is Ponce de Leon Hall, built in 1887 as a luxury resort by Henry Flagler, who co-founded the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller.

The following faculty members have been hired:

Douglas McFarland (B.A., Pomona College; M.A., San Francisco State; Ph.D., University of California at Berkeley) has been appointed as professor of liberal arts and Flagler’s first director of general education. He specializes in Ancient and Renaissance literature and teaches Latin and Greek. Dr. McFarland has 25 years of teaching experience at Berkeley, Stanford University and Oglethorpe University. At Oglethorpe, he served as Director of the Core Curriculum and Chair of the English Department. His most recent publications are “Geoffrey of Monmouth: Arthurian Tales” (Norton, forthcoming), translated from Latin to English as well as several articles in film studies.

Cheryl Serrano (B.A., University of Wisconsin at La Crosse; M.A., University of Northern Colorado; Ph.D., Florida State University) has been appointed professor of education. She specializes in ESOL and linguistics. Dr. Serrano most recently held the position of Education at Lynn University in Boca Raton. She has also served on the faculty of Florida Atlantic University as a bilingual education program consultant for the Georgia State Department of Education and in numerous other capacities as a consultant, trainer, researcher and grant writer. Her most recent publication is the “Effectiveness of Implementing Computer Assisted Language Learning Technology in an English Training Program for Specific Purposes,” in The International Journal of Learning.

David Crawford (B.F.A., Massachusetts College of Art; M.S., Chalmers University of Technology; Ph.D., Göteborg University in Sweden, to be awarded fall 2009) has been appointed assisted professor of graphic design. He specializes in motion graphics and has teaching experience at the Pratt Institute, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Crawford has extensive experience in media art and media design with numerous exhibitions, screenings and awards to his credit. His most recent publication is “The Implication of Movement: From Bergson to Bohm,” in New Realities: Being Syncretic.

Kristine Warrenburg (B.A., DePauw University; M.A., Butler University; Ph.D., University of Denver, to be awarded fall 2009) has been appointed assistant professor of communication. She specializes in rhetoric and communication ethics. Ms. Warrenburg comes to Flagler with teaching experience at Wittenberg University, Hollins University and the University of Denver. She has written and published on the rhetoric of the civil rights movement, public address and social movements, as well as rhetorical theory and related topics. Her most recent publication is “Aesthetic Argument: Moving Beyond Logic,” in Proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Argumentation.

Ward Shaffer (B.S., Pennsylvania State; M.S., Youngstown University) has been appointed instructor of mathematics. He has taught at Youngstown State and the College of Coastal Georgia, where he had extensive experience in curriculum development for K-8 mathematics teachers and served as the lead instructor for mathematics. Mr. Shaffer is the co-author of “Algebraic Thinking: Models for Problem Solving.”

Jeff Knight (B.S., University of Alabama; M.T.A., University of Alabama) has been appointed as instructor of accounting. He is a recent part-time instructor at Flagler. Jeff specializes in tax accounting and has a wide range of experience in business as former president and director of Acquisitions, Encompass Mechanical Services; former Vice President Director, Director and CFO of Riverside Refractories; former Senior Tax Manager, Arthur Anderson & Company.

Catherine McFarland (B.A., Smith College; M.A., Emory University) has been appointed instructor of art history. She specializes in the history of European art. Catherine has taught a wide range of art history courses at Oglethorpe University and the Atlanta College of Art for the last 13 years. At Oglethorpe, she also developed and taught courses in the general education program. Catherine has served on the Board of Directors of the Schultz Foundation, the Nexus Art Center and Image Film and Video.

Kim Bradley (B.A., Auburn University; M.F.A., University of New Orleans) has been appointed visiting instructor of English and coordinator of the writing center. She specializes in creative writing. Kim is a former Flagler student and recent Flagler part-time instructor and has a successful record of teaching English composition and creative writing. She was recently awarded a Florida Arts Council Enhancement Award (2007-08) and edited “Juice Up the True Say: Poems from the Children of Hastings.”
