Historic City News has received an invitation to our readers to attend an Open House regarding the Pope Road Scenic Outlook — a project currently being designed for the A1A Scenic and Historic Highway.
The Open House, which will offer an opportunity for public feedback on two design options, will be Monday, November 9th, 5:00 – 6:30 pm at St. Augustine Beach City Hall, located at 2200 A1A South.
The Pope Road Scenic Outlook is being funded through a National Scenic Byway grant, awarded to the City of St. Augustine Beach in 2007 and being administered by St. Johns County through an Interlocal Agreement.
The project will be on Pope Road, off the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, a 72-mile section of State Road A1A from the St. Johns/Duval County line south to the Flagler/Volusia County line. The project is anticipated to be complete around December 2010.
The Federal Highway Association’s National Scenic Byways Program recognizes designated Scenic Highways, Byways and All-American Roads that preserve, protect and enhance intrinsic resources. These intrinsic resources include scenic, archeological, historic, cultural, natural (environmental) and recreational characteristics. St. Johns County is home to both the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway and the William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway.
The City of St Augustine Beach, St. Johns County, Friends of A1A and consultant Zev Cohen are partnering together to hold the public open house.
For more information about the Pope Road Scenic Outlook, the development of the site plan, preliminary working drawings or the Open House, contact City of St. Augustine Beach Finance Director Melissa Burns at (904) 471-2122.
