Historic City News learned that the West Point Society of North Florida will conduct its Second Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony Saturday, August 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery on Marine Street.
Many don’t realize that the three pyramids in the National Cemetery recognize not only the 105 men in U.S. Major Francis L. Dade’s command, who fell under Seminole Indian gunfire December 28, 1835, but also the unidentified remains of 1,468 soldiers killed during the Seminole Wars of the early 1800s.
The Wreath Laying Ceremony at the monument site will commemorate the courage and sacrifices of the Seminole and Miccosukee Indians and the United States Military Academy graduates who perished in the Florida Indian Wars of 1817-1858.
