The PGA Tour announced a new partnership to Historic City News today that will bring a new Nationwide Tour event, the “Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open,” to Ponte Vedra Beach next October.
Winn-Dixie’s Chairman, CEO and President Peter Lynch and PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem unveiled their plans for the tournament that will benefit local charities.
“St. Johns County is very pleased with the PGA Tour’s decision to hold a second major golf event here in Ponte Vedra Beach” said District 4 St. Johns County Commissioner Phil Mays.
The Nationwide Tour is the “official proving ground” of the PGA TOUR. Two out of every three current PGA TOUR members formerly played the Nationwide Tour and alumni have won 257 PGA TOUR titles. With the Nationwide Tour celebrating its 20th year in 2009, this is another exciting development in the growth of the Tour.
Mays commented, “The economic impact of the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open tournament will be substantial and the visibility it provides St. Johns County is invaluable.”
The Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open will provide a purse of $600,000, with $108,000 being awarded to the winning professional. All four rounds of the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open will be broadcast on GOLF CHANNEL in the U.S. and distributed to an international audience as well.
Mays recognized professional golf’s local impact saying, “The County values the PGA Tour as a crucial foundation in our community and we look forward to a continued partnership for the benefit of the PGA Tour, St. Johns County citizens and local charities.”
