11th University of St Augustine 5K Run-Walk

Posted on 10/21/2010 By Historic City News

The University of St. Augustine has invited all Historic City News readers to participate this Saturday, October 23rd, in the 11th Annual University of St. Augustine 5K Run-Walk and Family Fun Fair.

The 5K run-walk is an opportunity to help the community and have a little fun. It will begin at 8:00 a.m. After the race, stick around for the free Family Fun Fair — with a moonwalk, fun slide, obstacle course, basketball shootout, face painting, super-hero appearances, BIG fire-rescue trucks, life guard and beach safety, lots of free food and great music.

Participation in the 5K is not required to attend the Family Fun Fair.

Last year this event helped raise over $8,000 for Project Special Care, a not-for-profit organization that provides advocacy, care and therapy for children and young adults who are facing challenges or crisis in their life.

Over 500 people participated in this community-wide event promoting healthy living.

This year, the event will benefit the Salvation Army program, FEED THE HUNGRY, which works to prevent hunger and the fear of hunger here in St. Johns County.

“We provide morning meals for workers at day labor companies, mid-day snacks and beverages and groceries for individuals and families,” Gary Bruce, Chairman of The Salvation Army of St. Johns, told Historic City News. “We are working to expand the program as the need increases in our community in the face of unemployment and underemployment of many of our citizens.”

Bruce said the Salvation Army is also gearing up to begin a mobile feeding program.

The event is held on the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences’ campus, located next to Flagler Hospital. To register for the 5K, call 904-826-0084.
