The Allegro at Harbour Island and the St Augustine Police Department collaborated efforts to help keep seniors of St Augustine safe according to an announcement received by Historic City News this afternoon.
The Allegro, and assisted living community on Anastasia Island, invited the police department to come interact with their residents and help educate the seniors on simple, common sense tips and precautions that can be incorporated into their daily routines.
One of the goals, Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens told us, is to help reduce the probability of seniors becoming a victim of crime. Unfortunately, no one is immune to crime. However, by taking certain precautions, citizens can reduce the feeling of fear and vulnerability that can come from making a few small changes.
Residents were shown that safety precautions do not have to dramatically alter their daily routines and most people can follow them without thinking.
Stevens pointed out key ingredients to personal safety; such as trusting one’s intuition and being prepared and knowledgeable in order to conquer fear. Information was also presented on how to make your residence more secure and how to use the Internet safely.
Identity theft was explained; as were some preventative measures to protect against it. Safety tips that reduce opportunities for criminals to make people victims and the importance of being aware, involved and reporting suspicious activity were also explained to the attendees.
Stevens said, “The St Augustine Police Department was delighted and honored to serve the seniors of St Augustine and thanks the Allegro for the opportunity to educate seniors on how to stay safe.”
