September may be too early to think about Christmas, but the Flagler County Chapter of the Blue Knights is already helping to assist some local youngsters in having a great holiday this year according to an article received by Historic City News today.
Members of the Blue Knights Chapter International Florida Chapter XXII recently donated $500 to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office “Christmas with a Deputy” program.
The Blue Knights is a motorcycle club that is made up of active and retired law enforcement officers.
The “Christmas with a Deputy” program began in 2009 when Sgt. Larry Jones approached Sheriff Donald W. Fleming with a plan to collect donations that would then be used to help underprivileged kids shop for Christmas.
The Sheriff immediately approved and Sgt. Jones went about seeking donations from the community.
Last Christmas, 11 Flagler County youngsters were able to buy gifts for their families as a result of donations and through a partnership with Target of Palm Coast.
“I hope to see it grow each year,” said Sgt. Jones.
Jim Vares, Blue Knights Chapter President, presented the donation to Sheriff Fleming.
“This is such a great program. We are just pleased that we are able to support it,” said Vares.
Sheriff Fleming noted that with the tough economic times and high unemployment in Flagler County, more youngsters will be impacted during this year’s holidays.
“This donation is appreciated and will go toward making the holidays brighter for some of our youngsters. The deputies enjoy participating in this program as much as the youngsters they get to shop with,” said Sheriff Fleming.
Donations to the program may be made by contacting Sgt. Jones at (386) 437-4116
