St. Augustine reporters at Historic City News have learned that police were called just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning notifying them of a physical altercation involving several participants in the area of 70 Hypolita Street.
Upon arrival, Officer Cory Weber made contact with a victim who told him that someone threw something at the car he was in, and, when the victim stepped out of the car to see who it was, 29 year-old James Ryan Levelle punched him in the mouth.
Several witnesses identified Levelle, who resides at 591 South Nassau Street in St Augustine.
According to the victim and witnesses at the scene, immediately after Levelle attacked the victim, several other people with Levelle joined in the fight.
Levelle was observed by witnesses to have started the fistfight by punching the victim.
Levelle was arrested and charged with battery.
A second victim of the same incident was picked up by a family member and brought to the Flagler Hospital Emergency Department.
That victim told police that he saw the first victim get hit in the face. When he turned around, he reported that he also got hit in the face. The second victim did not see who hit him and lost consciousness.
According to witness statements, one subject was hitting, then kicking, the victim into a curb — after he fell to the ground.
Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens of the St. Augustine Police Department reports that the second attacker’s identity is unknown, at this time, however, the investigation is ongoing. Levelle has been released from jail after posting a $5OO appearance bond.
