Bunker flower based imagery exhibit to open

Historic City News has learned that Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra to feature renowned painter John Bunker with Flower Forms at Daryl Bunn Studios, August 6th.

Stellers Gallery Ponte Vedra will host the opening reception of fine art painter John Bunker on Friday, August 6th from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Williams Cornelious exhibition space located inside Daryl Bunn Studios, 643 Edison Ave. in the Riverside area of Jacksonville, Fla. The exhibit will run through August. John Bunker has been a prominent figure in the northeast Florida arts community for more than 40 years.

According to Stellers Gallery owner Hillary Tuttle, the upcoming exhibit Flower Forms will feature a retrospective and new works by Bunker. Bunker’s abstracted and representational pieces include a range of work from very fine detail, to broad brush strokes and palette knife techniques. Bunker continues to develop his work with Florida based subject matter. His unique “Quadrant” series has evolved with highly expressive and inventive concepts in a diverse flower based imagery. Bunker continues to develop and reflect on the imagery with dense, saturated color and a light and airy sensibility.

Bunker’s extensive and varied local and national museum career includes serving as the long term associate director and interim director of the Jacksonville Art Museum. He also served as the director of the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville. Additionally, Bunker received the 2007 Individual Art Award from the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville for his four decades of volunteer service to the community. He is a graduate of the Smithsonian Institute’s Fundamentals of Museum Management and the J.P. Getty’s Museum Management Institute at the University of California at Berkeley. Bunker has also been a dedicated civic volunteer in the northeast Florida area for more than 35 years.

As an active volunteer, Bunker has served as president of the Riverside Fine Arts Association Concert Board, and as a member of JaxPride. He has also served as chairman of the Koger Gallery of Art and Gardens Advisory Committee and as curator of the Jacksonville International Airport Arts Commission along with work on behalf of the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Patrons of the Hearts program.

Bunker graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. He holds an advanced degree form Vanderbilt University- Peabody College in Nashville, Tn. His art works are included in numerous museum, corporate, public and private collections in the United States and abroad.
