Candidate qualifying ends tomorrow

Historic City News local reporters will be able to confirm the final lineup for Primary Election ballots after twelve noon tomorrow as the week-long qualifying period for local and county elections draws to a close.

Patsy Collins audits candidates to be sure that they have completed all of the requirements in order to qualify for election, or re-election, to seats including city and county commissioners, school board members, airport authority, mosquito control district, port, waterway & beach commission and others.

St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections Penny Halyburton is the official certifying officer for each potential candidate. Tomorrow, Halyburton will review all petitions and papers filed in her office and publish the information for each qualified candidate on her website;sjcvotes.us.

There are several ways that candidates “qualify” for election, including by petition method, by payment of qualifying fees, or a combination of both — depending of the office they seek.

Some of the candidates will be qualifying to run in Primary Elections on August 24th; however, many elections for municipal seats and judges are “non-partisan” and, depending on how many candidates qualified, those candidates will go straight to the November General Election.
