Historic City News reporters learned that two men find themselves in jail today after St. Augustine Police officers located who they say fired five gunshots into the front of a San Marco Avenue convenience store.
A clerk working at the T-11 Store located at 52 San Marco Avenue was apparently the intended victim of the firearm assault after he exposed a shoplifting attempt by the chief suspect at about 5:30 Wednesday evening.
The would-be shoplifter returned to the store after being caught with a t-shirt concealed under his clothes. He exchanged heated words with the clerk and revealed that he was carrying a handgun in his waistband.
The shots came shortly before 10:00 Wednesday night, according to St. Augustine Police Commander Barry Fox.
23 year-old Joseph Moscaritolo and 21 year-old Justin Mott Fugate are incarcerated at the St. Johns County Detention Facility – each charged with attempted murder.
Moscaritolo is also charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and aggravated assault with a weapon; a third degree felony.
Fugate is also charged with acting as an accessory after the fact and for illegal possession of a weapon; each crime a second degree felony.
Both men gave 2 Prado Street in St Augustine as their residence address.
The men are being held without bond at this time. More information will be available later today.
