St. Johns Count officials notified Historic City News that Corona Road in Ponte Vedra Beach will be closed to all vehicular traffic between Ponte Vedra Boulevard and Rutile Drive for approximately six months beginning September 13th.
Pedestrian access will be provided on weekends only.
The closure is due to the construction of the Corona Weir Safety Improvement Project. This project will eliminate structural deficiencies which lead to recurring pot holes and tripping hazards for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles between the roadway and the sidewalk. The project will also improve safety by increasing the sidewalk setback along the roadway corridor. Construction will include replacing the railing, sidewalks, downstream endwall and fence.
Closing Corona Road for the duration of the project improves the safety of both the public and the workers because the equipment will be very large and heavy. Additionally, completely closing the road will allow the project to be completed in about half the time it would otherwise require. Detour signs will be posted, directing motorists to use Rutile Drive, LeMaster Drive and Solana Road. Drivers are asked to plan routes accordingly and drive safely.
This Corona Road Weir project is a unique three-way partnership among the County, the Ponte Vedra Municipal Services District (MSD) and a group of nearby neighbors.
When the project was in its design phase, the neighbors approached the County and the MSD seeking aesthetic enhancements that would make the area stand out as a gateway entrance to the community.
With very limited county funding for capital projects, the County could not justify the added expense of decorative guard rails and concrete pillars. When the bids came in, the aesthetic improvements were valued at $10,241, so the additional cost was split by the County, MSD and neighbors. With the financial support of the MSD and the neighbors, the desired aesthetic improvements became a reality.
