Cultural Council celebrates ten year anniversary

Historic City News has learned that week, the St. Johns Cultural Council celebrated a decade in the arts with an Open House and Membership Meeting at the Cultural Arts Center, located at 370 A1A Beach Blvd, just south of the St. Johns County Pier.

Completed under a grant from the Work Projects Administration during the 1940’s, the historic building, owned by the City of St. Augustine Beach and leased to the Cultural Council, is considered the first preservation project undertaken by the group shortly after they incorporated in 2000.

It now hosts dance classes, community art interest classes, as well as housing the Council offices.

In an announcement on the organization’s website, they report, “There were dance demonstrations by the Dance Company, under the direction of Scott Benson; music by Jim Johnston; an arts retrospective lecture by author Karen Harvey; and tours of the building by charter SJCC Board member, Les Thomas.”

Current Board President, Tommy Bledsoe, wrapped up the evening with a cutting of the cake and a review of the work by the St. Johns Cultural Council. “The Council is looking forward to a challenging, productive, and exciting year in the arts,” Bledsoe said.
