District 4 candidate entertains backers at The Club

Ponte Vedra Beach Resident John H. “Jay” Morris, who at the end of March had already raised 26,350.00 in campaign contributions and only spent $2,500, has his hand out again — this time serving wine and hors d’oeuvres in the ballroom of The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club for a suggested donation of $50 a person.

With the minor exception of two out-of-town campaign donations, all of Morris’ financial support, reported thus far, comes from Ponte Vedra Beach.

Morris reported contributions totaling $26,350.00 in the first quarter; almost 2 1/2 times as much as was raised by every other candidate, to date, running for city and county office — combined, as reported by St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections, Penny L. Halyburton.

So far, Morris joins former St. Johns County Commissioner Jim Bryant and political newcomer Joseph Alan Mayhew in a three-way contest for the District 4 seat on the St. Johns County Commission. The Republican primary election will be held on August 24, 2010.

The one-hour R.S.V.P. event scheduled to commence at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25th, is being sponsored by Herbert H. Peyton and will be co-chaired by Frank Barker, Ken Bryan, Bland Cologne, Bill Dudley, Maury Edmonds, Bill Hart, Elvira Hasty, Barbara Krol, Tom Linnen, Dwayne McAfee, Lou Prichett and Betty Saunders; according to the invitation received by Historic City News.

Morris says that he moved down to a home in Ponte Vedra Beach permanently in 2000. He and his wife, Sue, have been married for 46 years and have two sons and five grandchildren. Their older son, Scott, also lives in Ponte Vedra Beach with his wife and two children.
