The St. Johns County Southeast Branch Library will host a special screening of the new Smithsonian documentary “Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story” on Saturday, May 22nd at 1:00 p.m.
The documentary is about the Federal Writers’ Project, under the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The controversial project put to work thousands of unemployed writers, including Richard Wright, Saul Bellow, John Cheever and Stetson Kennedy. This literary army fanned out across 48 states to produce a portrait of the USA through a series of state travel guides. The guides contain poignant and detailed explanations of regional culture, history, government, folklore, art and more.
St. Augustine’s own Stetson Kennedy, commentator in the film and local author, folklorist and social activist, will be on hand to answer questions afterward. Door prizes will be given away and light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Southeast Branch Library.
