Elections office provides facts about Primary

Vicky Oakes, Assistant Supervisor of Elections for St. Johns County, told Historic City News local St. Johns County reporters, “We’ve put together a quick info sheet as a reference to the upcoming August 24th Primary Election; listing some upcoming dates, deadlines, and election activities for St. Johns County voters.”

VOTER REGISTRATION CLOSES July 26, 2010
Last day to register to vote or to change your party affiliation for the Primary Election
Address changes may be made through Election Day
Florida is a Closed Primary State – Voters must vote the ballot of their designated political party

FLORIDA IS A CLOSED PRIMARY STATE
Democrats receive a Democratic ballot
Republicans receive a Republican ballot
Voters registered with no party affiliation or a minor party receive a nonpartisan ballot
Judicial and municipal candidates are nonpartisan and appear on all primary ballots

UNIVERSAL PRIMARY CONTEST
Although Florida is a closed primary state, if all candidates for an office have the same party affiliation and the winner will have no opposition in the General Election, all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary election for that office.
There are 2 Universal Primary Contests on the August 24th ballot

These races will appear on all ballots in the Primary
The winners will be determined in the Primary Election

Absentee ballots are currently available – call for yours today !
Any registered voter may vote by absentee ballot
Absentee ballots may be requested by telephone, on-line, or in person at the Elections Office
Deadline for requesting an absentee ballot to be mailed is 5 PM on the 6th day prior to an election

The St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections is giving hands on demonstration of the new DS200 voting equipment on the following dates:

July 27 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Ponte Vedra Library
July 29 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Anastasia Island Library

Hours: Monday thru Saturday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM at all locations
Voters may go to ANY Early Voting location in St. Johns County
Remember – take current and valid photo and signature ID with you when you vote
NOTE: If you do not have proper ID, you must vote a provisional ballot

ELECTION DAY August 24, 2010

Polls are open 7 AM – 7 PM
You must vote in the precinct of your legal residence
Polling locations are listed on your voter information card, or check the precinct locator on our website
Confirm your address. If different, call the 823-2238 before going to vote
