St. Johns Audubon Chapter president Andrew Thornton informed local Historic City News reporters that at their October meeting, a special presentation will be made about the challenges and threats facing the North Atlantic Right Whale.
This month’s meeting will be held October 25th at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the South Ponte Vedra Civic Association Community Center.
The community center is located approximately 7.3 miles north of the Vilano Bridge and 10 miles south of Mickler Road on Coastal Highway A1A. The building is just south of the Gate gas station and was formerly used as a fire station.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists Katie Jackson and Tom Pitchford will be the guest speakers at the Monday meeting. The speakers will highlight local research and conservation efforts to protect this critically endangered species.
The coastal waters off Florida and Georgia are the only known calving area for North Atlantic Right Whales.
