The Flagler College spring Community Lecture Series, titled “Analyze This: Literary and Film Interpretation,” continues with Flagler College professor of English, Dr. Tamara Wilson
Wilson will present “Welcome to the Whedonverse: The Past, Present and Future of Whedon Studies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse” on Tuesday, February 16th.
Wilson received her Ph.D. from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999 with an emphasis in renaissance studies. Her other areas of academic study include women’s literature, science fiction, fantasy and folklore.
Prior to Lafayette, she worked in the business community of San Jose, Calif., while pursuing her master’s degree at San Jose State.
Since coming to Flagler College, Wilson has presented a number of papers for the International Conference, among others, on a range of topics including classroom response to feminine utopias, female heroes and the works of Joss Whedon.
Whedon is an American director, producer and head writer of television programs including “Firefly,” “Angel” and “Dollhouse.” One of his “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” episodes, “Hush,” was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2000 for outstanding writing in a drama series.
The spring 2010 Community Lecture Series features speakers with different perspectives and interpretations of literature and films. Upcoming speakers for the spring include:
March 16 – Rosalinda Sanquiche, Ethical Markets Media executive director, will analyze the book, “The Year of the Flood,” by Margaret Atwood. Her lecture title is “Sex, Seeding and Sustainability in ‘The Year of the Flood.’ ”
April 20 – Dr. Douglas McFarland, Director of General Education and professor of liberal arts studies, will present “Wes Anderson’s ‘Rushmore’ and the Comedy of Buster Keaton.”
Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for the series. Lectures begin at 10 a.m., in the Flagler Room, 74 King St. reservations are suggested, but not required. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and pastry reception.
