Governor recognizes Janet Koehler

Historic City News got word that Governor Charlie Crist recognized Janet Koehler of Ponte Vedra Beach as this week’s Governor’s Point of Light for Environmental Awareness Month.

“Janet is a conscientious, concerned steward of Florida’s environment and natural resources,” said Governor Crist. “Florida is fortunate to have her as an advocate, raising awareness and educating Floridians on the importance of being responsible guardians of Florida’s environment for future generations.”

For over six years, Koehler has been a volunteer with the Guana Tolomato Matanzas (GTM) National Estuarine Research Reserve. Koehler has led and organized tours for visitors, coordinated field trips with elementary-school students, and developed educational programs at the reserve. Koehler helped coordinate a partnership between the St. Johns County 4-H, a local youth development program, and the reserve to train and prepare students participating in the 4-H State Marine Ecology Event, an annual competition that provides 4-H youth with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the marine and aquatic habitats. Koehler was also instrumental in developing and designing the estuary’s Science Camp, a week-long, science-oriented summer program for students entering fifth grade. Students participate in a variety of activities, including water quality testing, seining, lectures and more.

“Janet’s dedication to increasing environmental awareness in the local community shines. Many projects she is involved with require considerable time to coordinate and prepare,” said Mike Shirley, director of the GTM National Estuarine Research Reserve. “Janet always goes the extra mile to ensure people make a connection between a specific species or topic and potential conservation issues at hand”.
