Historic City News local reporters received word that serious injuries were sustained in a hit-and-run collision last night by 48 year-old Lorenzo Evans of St. Augustine; according to a report from Lieutenant Bill Leeper with the Florida Highway Patrol.
Crash Investigator Neil Mariotti determined that at about 7:00 p.m. last night, Evans was standing or crossing northbound US-1 in the left turn lane of US-1; about 100 feet south of Arapaho Avenue.
At that time, an unknown vehicle approached, and struck, Evans on the left side; causing him to fall into the center of the left turn lane, into the path of oncoming traffic.
A 2000 Ford Windstar driven by 78 year-old Joyce Canada, also of St. Augustine, was following the unknown vehicle and ran over Evans; coming to a stop in the median.
Evans was treated at the scene and transported to University Shands Hospital in Jacksonville in serious condition. Mariotti indicated that alcohol was believed to be a related cause in Evans injuries. No injury was sustained by Canada, or her passenger; nor was alcohol believed to be a related factor.
According to witnesses at the scene, the vehicle that first struck Evans is believed to be either a silver colored car or van.
