The 30th Annual Lincolnville Heritage Festival got underway today and promises to provide Historic City News readers a great weekend of large national musical acts, gospel choirs, soul food, BBQ, vendors, games, hot air balloon rides and much more.
Historic City News was on hand as the Jazz Ambassadors of the US Army Field Band were setting up on stage this afternoon and earlier visitors were entertained by platinum and Grammy Award winning “Kool and The Gang” as well as comedian Michael Winslow; whose well known collection of sound effects were introduced to movie goers in the movies “Police Academy” and “Spaceballs”.
Several student groups have already toured this year’s festival which is being presented by American Legion Post 194 and the Fort Mose Historical Society — today through November 7th.
We spoke with one group of students from Hastings who are enrolled in the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation “after school care” program. The kids, who ranged in ages from 6-12 years old, were enjoying their field trip to the Lincolnville Heritage Festival and when asked what part they liked the best, the consensus seemed to be listening to the comedian make funny sound effects.
Headlining artists also include the best in R&B, Funk, Soul, Gospel, Blues, & Jazz including Boyz II Men, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Percy Sledge and Guitar Shorty. Other artists include The Lee Boys, Willie “Real Deal” Green and Joy Dennis.
The festival has been moved to several locations throughout the years, and, this year, returns to Francis Field on Castillo Drive. The wind, cooler weather and some threatening rain have not put a damper on this weekend’s activities; the proceeds of which will continue to support the rich history and heritage of Lincolnville and Fort Mose. “This is certain to be an amazing weekend for the whole family,” festival organizers told us.
General Admission tickets are $5 per day or $10 for all 3 days and VIP tickets are still available.
