Chris Smith, chair of the art department at Flagler College, congratulated graphic design students who won several awards at the 2010 American Advertising Federation ADDY Awards on Friday, February 19th at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville.
Flagler student Kristina Cancelmi walked away with the student “Best of Show” award. This award earned Cancelmi a $1,000 prize.
Students Katherine Riffle, Liza Dixon, Michele Wildey, Aaron O’Brien, Jessica Wyatt, Emily Christy Ansley Randall, Carrie Marie Green and Abbenyi Wa Abbenyi all took home gold or silver student ADDYs at the local level.
“The ADDY Awards competition is typically a professional affair,” Smith said. “It’s like the Grammys of advertising. When the students participate in these events, people hear Flagler College mentioned quite often, so when these companies start hiring, they associate our graduates with success.”
The AAF Student ADDY Awards Competition is a unique national awards program designed specifically for college students. Work entered at the local level can move up to the regional and national judging, just like the work entered by professionals across the country. Students who won Gold Awards in the Jacksonville competition will be able to compete in the regional competition and possibly, move on to compete at the national level.
“For the students in particular, winning is a big resume piece that is recognizable nationally,” Smith said.
