Historic City News reporters have learned that police responded to a call from a clerk in a store on St. George Street Friday evening, saying that a man was in the store with a loaded handgun and was refusing to leave.
After searching the area for a man fitting the description, police found 19 year-old Juan Rivera-Vazquez in front of 52 St George Street.
When police made contact with him, Rivera-Vazquez told officers that he had a gun.
Corporal Charles Simpson recovered a loaded revolver from Rivera-Vazquez’ waistband and, during a physical search, discovered 41 rounds of ammunition in Rivera-Vazquez front pants pocket.
Also found in Rivera-Vazquez’ possession, were 13 hydrocodene pills for which Rivera-Vazquez had no valid prescription.
Community Affairs Officer Barbara Clifford of the St. Augustine Police Department reports that Rivera-Vazquez was taken into custody and charged with carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
Rivera-Vazquez remains in custody in lieu of $7,500 bond.
