Chef Michael & Christine McMillan announced to local Historic City News reporters that, effective today, The Bakery by Opus 39 will be closing and, effective this Wednesday, June 23, 2010, Opus 39 Restaurant & Food Gallery will be closing, as well.
Our reporters were told “adverse economic conditions experienced in the recent past” were to blame for the decision — one Chef Michael says comes “with a very heavy heart.”
Asked about the future of the restaurant, McMillan said “Though Christine and I are unsure of our exact plans at this moment; we hope to assist in arrangements that will allow the wonderful breads from our Bakery to continue.”
According to McMillan, “In the short term they will still be available on a wholesale basis, and with any luck, back on the shelves under new management for retail soon.”
Beginning Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and each day after until the inventory is liquidated, McMillan will be offering deep discounts on the remaining inventory of wines located in their cellar at 39 Cordova Street.
Opus 39 cookbooks have now officially become collector’s items. McMillan says, “If you haven’t already purchased yours, you can still get them at the restaurant or safely online at www.opus39.com”
Chef Michael wrote, “Once again, thank you again for the wonderful times here in St. Augustine and for the support shown to us by our friends, neighbors and the wonderful patrons we have gotten to know over the last 7 1/2 years.”
