Professor examines church architectural history

Brian Thompson reported to Historic City News that Dr. Timothy Johnson, professor of Religion and chair of the Liberal Studies Department at Flagler College, will present “Presbyterian Wine in Byzantine Wineskins: Reflections on Flagler’s Memorial Church” on Tuesday, December 14th.

This presentation, a segment of the Community Lecture Series at Flagler College, will examine Memorial Presbyterian Church in light of the writings of one of the architects, Thomas Hastings, late 19th century church architecture, and the on-going relationship between place and spirituality in the Christian tradition.
Dr. Johnson holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. A German-American Fulbright Scholar, he also holds a licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Diploma Litterarum Latinarum from the Pontifical Gregorian University, a bachelor’s in Sacred Theology from Pontifical Theological Faculty of St. Bonaventure, Rome, and a B.A. in Theology from St. Louis University. Dr. Johnson has taught in Europe and Africa.

The author and editor of five books on Saint Bonaventure and Medieval Franciscans, Johnson has been published in numerous North American and European journals. He has completed an English translation of Bonaventure’s Latin Sunday Sermons, and is currently editing a volume on Franciscan Preachers for Brill Academic. He is the senior theology co-editor for Franciscan Studies.

While his primary area of expertise is the history of Christian spirituality and theology, Dr. Johnson also teaches courses as diverse as Religion and Film and Contemporary Theological Thought.

The Flagler College Lecture Series, established in 2007, is designed to offer educational opportunities to the St. Augustine Community.

Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture, or $15 for the series. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King Street.
