Recycle cell phones at Creatures of the Night

John Brueggen, Director and General Manager of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, announced to Historic City News that as part of the popular annual “Creatures of the Night” Halloween festivities, they will host a cell phone recycling program.

Eco-Cell, a recycling company that focuses on raising funds to save gorilla habitats and to help other ecological non-profits, will partner with the Alligator Farm in this program, designed to help the planet and raise funds for education.

During the Alligator Farm’s Creatures of the Night events on October 29th, 30th and 31st, Eco-Cell will collect used cell phones and will donate 10% of the value of each phone collected back to the Alligator Farm for conservation and education programs.

“Creatures of the Night” is one of the Alligator Farm’s most popular annual events. It offers trick-or-treating among the animals and birds, plus fun, treats and surprises during the three-day Halloween weekend.

Eco-Cell will distribute free press-on tattoos to all children who bring in phones.

Events run from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children. Annual pass members receive $1 discount.

“We hope the community will come out again for a great Halloween weekend, and we hope that this year they’ll participate in the cell phone recycling program, as well,” said Brueggen. “This is a great opportunity to have fun and to do something positive for endangered species and for our world. We’re happy to have created this partnership with Eco-Cell.”

It has been estimated that only 10% of unwanted cell phones are recycled each year. According to the EPA, if all of the 100 million cell phones ready for end-of-life management in the U.S. were recycled, enough energy would be saved to power more than 18,500 U.S. households with electricity for one year.
