SAHS celebrates 50 years – inducts Hall of Fame

Less than two weeks from now, the St. Augustine-Ketterlinus High School Alumni Association, Inc. reminds Historic City News readers that they will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of St. Augustine High School, at its Varella Avenue location, with a dinner at the Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village.

According to Brad Davis, President of the association, the event on October 14th will include induction ceremonies for the first St. Augustine-Ketterlinus High School Hall of Fame class.

Seating for the 50th Anniversary Celebration and Hall of Fame Dinner is limited and reservations are required. Tables of ten are available for $700. Individual admission is $75 for the general public and $65 for 2010 St. Augustine-Ketterlinus High School Alumni members. Dress is semi-formal.

The Hall of Fame inductees will also be recognized at the Nease-vs-SAHS football game on October 15, 2010. A permanent display will be mounted on the Hall of Fame Wall at St. Augustine High School.

The Hall of Fame award recognizes graduates of St. Augustine and Ketterlinus High School who have applied their education and experiences by contributing to society in significant and meaningful ways. It also commends those individuals whose connection with the schools has enriched and advanced the quality of school life. The Alumni Association honors these men and women as role models for our students, for their contributions and their outstanding representation of the St. Augustine and Ketterlinus High School tradition of excellence.

The first inductees to the St. Augustine-Ketterlinus High School Hall of Fame are as follows:

Verle A. Pope, SAHS Class of 1924: A successful local businessman, Mr. Pope served in the Florida Senate for 24 years.

W. Douglas Hartley, KHS Class of 1936: Mr. Hartley was superintendent of St. Johns County Schools for 28 years.

Richard O. Watson, KHS Class of 1951: Mr. Watson currently serves as a Senior Circuit Judge.

Leonard O. Pellicer, SAHS Class of 1963: Dr. Pellicer has been recognized for his contributions in the field of educational leadership.

Stephanie J. Young, SAHS Class of 1967: Ms. Young was the first female to graduate from the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement Administrators.

Ronald L. Bailey, SAHS Class of 1973: Major General Ronald L. Bailey is the first African-American to lead a Marine Regimental Combat Team into combat and the First African-American to hold the post of director of the Expeditionary Warfare School.
