Flagler College reported to the St. Augustine local news desk that they will host a screening of the film “The Big Kahuna” followed by a forum and discussion with its playwright, Dr. Roger Rueff.
The screening is scheduled for Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and the forum is scheduled for Wednesday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m.
Both events will be held in the Gamache-Koger Theater of the Ringhaver Student Center, located at 50 Sevilla St.
Several years ago, Rueff visited Flagler College when his play, “Hospitality Suite,” later turned into the film, “The Big Kahuna,” starring Danny DeVito and Kevin Spacey, was being featured at the Limelight Theater.
Rueff’s visit was well received, and resulted in some very stimulating discussions with Flagler students. Rueff’s ideas regarding politics, society, religion, science, nature and evolution tend to provide a basis for a very wide range of discussions.
Flagler Professor of English Dr. Jim Wilson and Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Andrea McCook were both instrumental in bringing Rueff back to the Flagler campus for a forum and discussion.
During his time on campus, Rueff will be attending various classes for discussions.
“Roger Rueff is eager to talk about playwrighting as well as discuss the various concepts and philosophies with which he challenges his audience,” McCook said. “His discussions would be wonderful for any class, individual student or faculty member with interest in philosophy, religion, science and academic freedom.”
Rueff’s visit will coincide with the premier of his newest play, “The Imperative.” The setting for the play is a small liberal arts college, and the theme touches on issues of philosophy, religion, science and politics. The cast includes McCook and will perform at the Limelight Theatre on Tuesdays during the month of February.
