Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum told Historic City News local St. Johns County news reporters that some of Florida’s most effective crime fighters since 1989 have been Senior Sleuths who volunteer in the Seniors vs. Crime Project.
“This special program serves as my eyes and ears,” McCollum said. Seniors become involved in not only their own protection, but also that of their fellow citizens. Some volunteers actively assist in consumer protection investigations.
The Senior Sleuths program is well-known around the state; boasting more than 3,000 participants and growing.
“These crime fighters have been responsible for recovering over $8 million for seniors who were the victims of con artists,” McCollum said, while he was in Jacksonville last month for the opening of one of the city’s two Seniors vs. Crime offices. “Other elderly people will trust them more.”
Unethical businesses and individuals may believe that their senior target is helpless when, in fact, these would-be victims may be working for the Attorney General.
“I am proud to be a partner with these outstanding citizens,” McCollum said.
