Bill Hughes, general manger of TPC Sawgrass, announced to Historic City News St. Johns County reporters that the PGA Tour and TPC Sawgrass are very proud to partner with Flagler College in hosting the annual President’s Golf Classic benefiting the Flagler College Scholarship Fund.
The 2010 charity event will take place at the Dye’s Valley Golf Course at TPC Sawgrass on October 4th.
“I am delighted that we will have the opportunity to play the President’s Golf Classic at Dye’s Valley course at TPC Sawgrass this October,” said Dr. William T. Abare Jr., president of Flagler College. “It is a fabulous course and I am hopeful that it will attract more golfers from the Jacksonville area. The proceeds from the event will be used to provide scholarships for deserving Flagler student-athletes.”
The Dye’s Valley Course is best known as the sibling to the world-renowned Players Stadium Course. It is referred to as a “challenging yet fair course” with water on every hole.
The event is a four-person team scramble tournament and the field is limited to the first 120 entrants. Last year the event raised almost $15,000 toward Flagler scholarships.
Various sponsorship packages are available and individual player registration is $250. Registration covers cart, greens fees, range balls, tournament golf shirt, prizes and an awards reception. Additionally, a portion of the registration fee benefits the Flagler College Athletics scholarship fund and is tax deductible.
The top seven scoring teams and the team with the highest score will be awarded prizes. The team with the lowest gross score will have their names added to the Abare Cup. The Abare Cup is a perpetual trophy established by the Board of Trustees on February 18, 2009, as a tribute to William T. Abare, Jr., who served Flagler College in various administrative positions since 1971 and as President since 2001.
Prizes will also be awarded for the longest drive and closest to the pin.
Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Among the contests being held are Monster Putt, Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive. Following play, there will be an awards presentation and reception.
Sponsors include TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley, Casa Monica Hotel, Jack Wilson Family of Dealerships, Flagler’s Legacy, Baker’s Sporting Goods, The Bailey Group, St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, Prosperity Bank, Innovative Mechanical Services, ThompsonBaker Agency, Kresge, Platt & Abare, and many more.
