Historic City News readers are invited to join St. Johns County officials and the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs this Saturday, September 25th, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home.
The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the nursing home, located at 4650 State Road 16 in St. Augustine.
The public is cordially invited to attend the ceremony and reception immediately following. Please note public parking for the ceremony will be at Turning Point at Calvary Church, located south of the nursing home on State Road 16, with shuttle bus service provided to the nursing home.
The nursing home is the first for veterans in northeast Florida and will provide skilled-nursing care for up to 120 veterans. St. Johns County donated the land for the facility, and County officials, staff and local veterans worked very hard to secure St. Johns County as the site selected by the State. The economic impact of the nursing home will be substantial for St. Johns County, particularly the more than 180 jobs the nursing home provides.
The Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home is the first Florida veterans’ home to be named after a U.S. Navy veteran. Clyde Lassen received the Medal of Honor from President Lyndon B. Johnson for his heroic actions on June 19, 1968, in the Republic of Vietnam. Lassen, a Navy helicopter pilot, was born in Fort Myers and entered the service from Jacksonville. He retired as a Commander in 1982 and died in 1994. The guided missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG-82) is also named in his honor.
The Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs began construction of the 95,500 square-foot nursing home in June 2008. This is the 6th veterans’ nursing home in Florida and the first to be meet LEEDS green-building certification.
