Visit the Castillo de San Marcos for free

Posted on 08/15/201008/16/2010 By Historic City News

Historic City News readers looking for something entertaining to do today should head over to the Castillo de San Marcos and take advantage of free admission to the Castillo — and more than 100 other national parks.

Castillo de San Marcos, the Spanish fortress which was built in 1672 to protect and defend Spain’s claims in the New World, was never defeated in battle and is probably the most recognized landmark in the City of St. Augustine.

The National Park Service has opened the massive gates to the fort’s sally port so visitors can look and touch the scarred walls that still stand witness to over 330 years of history and culture.

The Castillo de San Marcos is open to the public from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. today and every day of the year except December 25. (The ticket booth closes at 4:45 pm.) The Park grounds are closed from midnight until 5:30 a.m.
