The local St. Augustine news desk has learned that police received a call from a witness Wednesday evening, reporting that they observed a man climbing out of an apartment window in the area of 400 Anastasia Boulevard.
The witness was able to offer a description of the suspect to police communications officers, who dispatched patrolmen to the scene. Police conducted a search for a white man that appeared to be carrying something described as possibly a stereo in the company of another white man who was riding a skateboard.
While canvassing the area, officers made contact with a white man riding a skateboard who matched the description given. The man advised he had nothing to do with the incident, but saw another man run south on Matanzas and jump into a red Chevy S10 pickup truck.
Police Officer Leland Caudle went back to the apartment of the incident and made contact with the resident, who had just arrived home.
Caudle and the resident discovered that the back window of the apartment had, in fact, been broken out. The resident advised police that the only thing missing was a laptop computer valued at about $400.
The man living in the apartment told Officer Caudle that he had a house guest the night before and that they owned a red Chevy S10.
Community Affairs Officer Barbara Clifford of the St. Augustine Police Department reports that police attempted to make contact with those individuals but that they were unsuccessful at that time. However, the investigation is ongoing and police are pursuing all available leads.
