Crash investigator J.D. “Mac” McGinnis reported to Historic City News from the scene that, for the second time in one week, traffic unit members of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office have responded to an ATV crash on a public street.
Last night’s collision occurred in the 5300 Block of Race Track Road.
At about 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night, three teenage boys were riding their ATV on Avenue C, near 5th Street, when a 13 year-old passenger fell to the pavement and suffered critical head and neck injuries.
Last night, at almost the exact same time as Tuesday’s crash, 34 year-old Wyatte Leon Osteen III, who resides at 1556 W Windy Willow Dr., was operating his 2007 Honda all terrain vehicle; driving eastbound on the paved shoulder of the roadway.
McGinnis says that after crossing the Bartram Springs Bridge, Osteen turned north and attempted to cross Race Track Road. Instead, Osteen was struck by a 43 year-old woman who was driving a 2008 Kia Rio. The driver of that vehicle, Kay Campbell from Macclenny, was not charged.
Osteen was taken to Baptist South Hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being thrown from the ATV.
Osteen was not wearing a helmet and he was cited for operating an ATV on the roadways.
