Historic City News has learned that former State Representative Audrey Gibson has won the Special Democratic Primary Election for Florida’s district 1.
The special Democratic primary was held yesterday to fill the seat vacated by Senator Tony Hill; who has joined Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown’s administration.
Both Gibson and Hill are residents of Jacksonville; Gibson was born there. In the private sector, Gibson worked as a legal liaison and public relations professional.
Gibson earned her Associate of Arts degree from Florida Community College at Jacksonville in 1976 and a Bachelor of Science degree in criminology from Florida State University in 1978. She lists her religious affiliation as African-Methodist-Episcopal.
Gibson won handily in each county; receiving 62 percent of the vote across the district which spans 13 precincts in St. Johns County, Duval, Putnam, Flagler and Volusia counties.
Other candidates for the District 1 seat were former state representative Terry Fields, finishing with 32 percent of the vote followed by newcomers to elected office Leandrew Mills III, and Ramon Day, 3 percent each.
Gibson will face a write-in candidate October 18.
