Alison Fulcher reminds Historic City News readers that although the St Johns County Audubon Society meetings and presentations take a summer break, there are many volunteer opportunities and activities through the Beach Nesting Birds Program.
Field Trip
Saturday, April 16th at Viera Wetlands
Viera wetlands consist of 200 acres divided by berms into four cells of approximately 35 acres each, plus a central lake. While functioning as a healthy, productive, and effective wastewater system, the wetlands further provide for a biologically diverse ecosystem—affording visitors a wonderful, up-close opportunity to view Brevard County’s native wildlife and vegetation. Expect to see a diversity of ducks, egrets, herons, bitterns, and hawks, including crested caracaras and bald eagles. Meet at the parking lot outside of the wetlands at 8:00 am. April Monthly Meeting
Monday, April 25 at 7 pm: Twenty Best Natives for Your Home Landscape
Renee Stambaugh, representing the Sea Oats Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, will share her experiences with Florida native plants, appreciating the aesthetic and ecological roles in the residential landscape. Stambaugh, owner and operator of Native Plant Consulting, says, “You can enjoy a yard that requires little water, fertilizer, and fewer pesticides, and provides a haven for butterflies, birds, and other wildlife.” If you are a seasonal resident, you will find that native plants better survive your absence in the summers. Chapter Meetings are held on the Fourth MONDAY of the month starting at 7:00 at the South Ponte Vedra Civic Association Community Center.
