Commissioners go pink – for a good cause

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to show their support, members of the city commission donned their pink t-shirts during tonight’s regular meeting.

The gesture by the mayor and commissioners was also a “show of support” for city firefighters who proudly wear pink duty shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness for the entire month of October.

During the evening’s proclamations, Flagler Hospital President Joe Gordy received Proclamation 2011-36; recognizing the local health care facility’s “Project Pink”.

If you are age 40 or older, Gordy says you should join the millions of women who get mammograms on a regular basis.

“More and more women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages,” Gordy told Historic City News reporters. “As a result, breast cancer deaths are on the decline.”

All the commotion over pink is designed to call attention to importance of early detection.

“Encourage the women in your life to get mammograms on a regular basis,” Gordy said.
