Doctor indicted for distributing misbranded drugs

A 60 year-old Jacksonville physician, Charles V. Wilson, was indicted Wednesday on ten counts of defrauding the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs according to an announcement received by Historic City News.

United States Attorney Robert E. O’Neill said Dr. Wilson was also indicted on ten counts of illegally importing and distributing misbranded prescription drugs.

Wilson faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison on each of the health care fraud counts and 3 years in federal prison on each of the misbranded prescription counts.

According to the indictment, between August 2008 and November 2010, Wilson illegally imported into the United States foreign, non-FDA-approved prescription drugs, which he administered to his Medicare and Medicaid patients.

Wilson billed Medicare and Medicaid as if he had administered the legitimate, FDA-approved medications.

The case was investigated by Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General and the Food and Drug Administration. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Russell C. Stoddard.

An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of the federal criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
