Lieutenant Jeremy Robshaw, St. Johns County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer, reported to Historic City News that firefighters responded to an E-911 call from the Hydro Aluminum facility early Wednesday morning.

The industrial fire occurred inside building “B” in the 200 block of Riviera Boulevard; which is generally used to melt material for production.

First responders observed heavy smoke coming from one of the furnace units.

Employees of the facility utilized multiple fire extinguishers in an attempt to cool some molten material that spilled during the production process. Due to the extreme heat, these efforts were unsuccessful.

Firefighters utilized water to carefully cool the material and begin the clean-up process. Eventually the material was cooled and the smoke dissipated without further incident. There were no injuries reported.

An investigation into the cause of the industrial fire is currently underway by the company.

Initial damages have been estimated at $50,000.
