United States Attorney Robert E. O’Neill announced to Historic City News today that a grand jury has returned indictments charging two Jacksonville residents with malicious mischief and violation of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
If convicted on all counts, 22 year-old Scott Anthony Hill and 20 year-old Fang Chin Tsai face a maximum penalty of not more than three years in federal prison; if sentenced consecutively.
According to the indictment, on January 20th this year, Hill and Tsai used spray paint to vandalize the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument with graffiti — causing damage costing $500 or more to repair.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of the federal criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
This case was investigated by the National Park Service. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Guard.
