U. S. Park Ranger Jeffrey Edel, Historic Weapons Supervisor at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, reported to Historic City News that the National Park Service continues to celebrate Native American Heritage throughout the month of November.
Today, Castillo staff will present an interpretive panel concentrating on the Seminoles and Plains Indians experience here. Other special programs about Indian tribes who were involved with the fort’s history will be given on Saturday the 19th and 26th.
• Adult Programs will be at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
• Children’s Programs will be given at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The exhibits discuss Spanish imperial expansion and its effects on the Timucua; United States expansion into Florida and its effects on the Seminoles; and the later imprisonment of Plains Indians, the Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, and Caddo in the 1870’s, and the Mescalero and Chiricahua Apache.
