Leo Masci, Vice President of Port Orange based Masci General Contractor Inc., announced to Historic City News yesterday that he has completed all of the “heavy lifting” at his Malaga Street jobsite; reopening eastbound traffic on King Street.
The Florida Department of Transportation drainage improvement project has detoured eastbound traffic from US-1 since January 10, 2011.
Final construction activities will include replacing drainage grates and installing traffic sensors that control the signal operation and are embedded in the pavement, all of which will require only minor traffic disruptions.
Joe Tringali who owns Carmelo’s Marketplace on the corner of Malaga and King Street says that the workers there have been considerate. The updated drainage system was needed and is designed to help reduce flooding in that area, according to Tringali — but, he knows his customers will be happy to see the busy intersection fully open.
Now, Masci has a new employer — the City of St. Augustine, who contracted with Masci to lead the Riberia Street rehabilitation project. Although Florida Power & Light and AT&T both have been working on underground utilities during Phase I, the beginning of the roadway construction started this week.
