McGovern discharged from hospital

In an update from Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Historic City News learned that St. Augustine’s most famous Democrat was discharged from the hospital with instructions to get some rest.

The Sioux Falls, South Dakota hospital published notification that 89 year-old former U. S. Senator, George McGovern, was released from the hospital yesterday after having been admitted for severe fatigue.

McGovern resides at Marsh Creek in St. Augustine during the winter months since the death of his wife, Eleanor, in 2007. During the summer months, McGovern returns to his Mitchell, SD home.

“I feel good and look forward to returning to work”, he said in a statement the hospital released by email and on his facebook.

While in St. Augustine, McGovern is active in many public functions — he speaks at local events and can be seen around town enjoying the St. Augustine lifestyle.

His doctors in South Dakota say McGovern is doing well and will continue to improve.

McGovern was a U.S. senator for South Dakota from 1963 to 1981 and the Democratic Party’s nominee for president in 1972. He lost that election to incumbent president Richard M. Nixon and vice president Spiro T. Agnew; the election that will forever be remembered for the notorious break-in of the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel.
