Nelmar Terrace named a Historic District

Mark Knight, Director of Planning and Building, reported to local Historic City News reporters that the City of St. Augustine has added another neighborhood designated as a National Register Historic District.

The Nelmar Terrace Historic District covers all or parts of nine blocks, approximately 29 acres, with 100 contributing buildings and is roughly bordered by Hospital Creek on the east, San Marco Avenue on the west, San Carlos Avenue on the south and Milton and Alfred streets on the north.

This brings the total number of National Register Historic Districts in St. Augustine to seven.

Nelmar Terrace joins six other neighborhoods to form an elite group of properties which are eligible for the city’s “Historic Preservation Property Tax Exemption” for renovations.

Formerly designated districts are City of St. Augustine (downtown St. Augustine), Model Land Company, Abbott Tract, Lincolnville, North City and the Fullerwood Park.

The City of St. Augustine’s Comprehensive Plan calls for the city to attempt to achieve National Register designation status for neighborhoods, however, Knight stated in an announcement received by Historic City News today, “this is a designation the city would pursue anyway because of our history and our desire to keep the historic nature of the city in the forefront.”
