Nelmar Terrace next proposed Historic District

The City of St. Augustine told local Historic City News reporters that it is hoping to add the Nelmar Terrace National Register Historic District as the seventh neighborhood to be designated a Historic District.

The six existing designated districts are City of St. Augustine (downtown St. Augustine) Model Land Company, Abbott Tract, Lincolnville, North City and The Fullerwood Park National Register Historic District.

The City of St. Augustine’s Comprehensive Plan calls for the city to attempt to achieve national register designation status for neighborhoods, however, Mark Knight, Director of Planning and Building said, “This is a designation the city would pursue anyway because of our history and our desire to keep the historic nature of the city in the forefront.”

The proposed Nelmar Terrace district covers all or parts of nine blocks, approximately 29 acres, with 100 contributing buildings and is roughly bordered by Hospital Creek on the east, San Marco Ave. on the west, San Carlos Ave. on the south and Milton and Alfred streets on the north.

State of Florida, Division of Historical Resources approved the application with minor revisions, and will represent the city at a conference call meeting on Thursday, January 20 when the district is on the agenda to be discussed.
